Extension Activities
Watercolor Painting
Provide an applicable page or allow free design. Use liquid watercolor or make your own by putting watercolor cakes in a cup of water and using droppers to create art.
Freeze Tempera or Liquid Watercolors
Freeze tempera or liquid watercolors in an ice cube tray with popsicle sticks, then paint with the frozen paint.
Water on Earth Chart
Use a basic blank 100s chart (10 × 10 table). Fill it with different colors for the different forms of water on Earth:
- Salt Water – Color 97 blocks
- Frozen Water / Ice – Color 2 blocks
- Freshwater – Color 1 block (includes groundwater, surface water, and water vapor — all combined is less than 1% of Earth’s water)
Ice Melting Experiment: What Materials Keep Heat from Getting to the Ice?
Give groups ice and various materials (paper towel, aluminum foil, cloth, plastic bag, etc.). Have them wrap the ice and arrange the packages in the order they think will melt from fastest to slowest.
Alternative surface method: Place ice cubes on different surfaces (wood board, metal tray, plastic dish, paper towel) and see which melts fastest.
